… The dichotomy of catastrophe and control also inspires Gunna Schmidt, whose paintings are frequently excursions into the very depth of the painterly approach, challenging the catastrophe of painting by aiming to leave everything behind, from theory to technique, striving to arrive at a point of unique and sincere expression.

This element of ruthlessness, the daring of her approach, makes her work appear at times naive, even childish, if not outright wreckless: always opting for the obviously wrong strategy, the wrong symbol, the wrong trace – never the smart move.
